On the 14th of October I visited Livingstone Primary School in Vermont to announce $68,000 of grants to three local schools who are set to benefit from a Federal program to increase the number of young Australians skilled in the languages and cultures of China and Korea under the Becoming Asia Literate: Grants to Schools program.

Blackburn Primary and Livingstone Primary Schools will each receive $20,000 to help expand the teaching of Asian languages. Yarra Valley Grammar will recieve $18,000 to help expand their teachign program.

This is fantastic news for our local schools as they will now be able to further expand their already innovative Asian language programs.

Giving our students the opportunity to develop Asian language skills can be a big boost to their opportunities and help our community gain from engagement with our closest neighbours.

Livingstone Primary will use this Federal grant to expand and improve its fantastic Korean and Mandarin programs.

Blackburn primary will use the $20,000 to create a new Mandarin learning centre at the school.

Yarra Valley will use their grant of $18,000 to to develop a new Chinese program with specific resources to support the curriculum. There will be an emphasis on information technology including iPad applications for Mandarin

Last year, funding of $40,000 was allocated to Ringwood Secondary College in partnership with Heathmont, Norwood and Parkwood colleges to enhance Indonesian languages.

In total more than $2.8 million will be shared by 190 schools to promote the teaching and learning of Asian languages and culture in school curriculum and communities under round three of the Becoming Asia Literate: Grants to Schools element of the program.
